MODULE 2

How could I portray a context, emotion or atmosphere through other art forms than dance?

Antony Gormley- Sculptor

Antony Gormley has created sculptures in collaboration with acclaimed choreographers for works such as Sutra, Zero Degrees, Babel and Noetic. His artworks investigate the relationship of the human body to space.
In Zero Degrees, Gormleys sculptures enhances the idea of individuality of the body and identity. The two sculptures/dummies are replicates of the two choreographers/ dancers Akram Khan and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. One of the "dummies" is made unable to move any of its limbs and therefor able to stand, as for the other "dummie"which limbs are loose and only crumbles to the ground.

I find it interesting appreciating how the sculptures are used to portray the context of this choreography.
The sculptures enhance the difference between the two dancers and therefore become a great part of the performance.

In the spring of 2015, I watched 'SPIRIT' an evening performance at The Gothenburg Opera House, in which both Sidi larbi Cherkaoui and Antony Gormley was involved in.
It is fascinating how Gormley supports Sidi Larbi's ideas with his sculptures and the way they are used by the dancers. It is interesting hearing both Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Antony Gormley descriping thei ideas and how they applied them to the piece 'Noetic'.
Both of them are interviewed on this site: http://en.opera.se/forestallningar/spirit-2013-2014/

I would like to research more in to this idea of how other artists have collaborated to enhance an emotion or context for a piece.

  1. Thanks Hannah a good starting point here - let's see more blogs form the materials you have already collected from you work - Parts 4 and 5 especially - to help with your planning for the professional inquiry - put in the links you talked about as well... looking forward to these - restating the question "How could I portray a context, emotion or atmosphere through other art forms than dance?" and finding literature about your topic.
